Dr. Hiroharu Kawanaka graduated from the Faculty of Engineering at Mie University in 1999 and received a Dr. Eng. degree from Mie University Graduate School of Engineering in 2004. After graduating, he again entered Mie University Graduate School of Medicine to study Medical Informatics and Medical/Clinical Information Systems. 

In 2004, he established a company for medical information systems, "Medical Engineering Institute, Inc." The company developed "CLISTA!," a DataWareHouse for clinical use. More than 120 large-scale hospitals use our system to analyze clinical data archived in the EHR for clinical studies or business analyses. This company also developed a Medical Accounting System for National University Hospitals (HOMAS2). This system is now running in ALL National University Hospitals in Japan. He is the founder of this company, and he worked for this company as a director from 2004 to 2021. 

In 2005, he received a grant, "NEDO*1 Industry Fellowship Program", and worked for Mie Technical License Organization (Mie TLO*2) to support research collaborations and start-up companies. 

2006, he joined Mie University Graduate School of Engineering as an assistant professor. He received a Ph. D. in Medical Science (D.M.Sc) from Mie University Graduate School of Medicine 2009. Japan Association for Medical Informatics (JAMI) certified him as a healthcare information technologist in the same year. In 2012, he stayed at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center (Cincinnati Children's Research Foundation) as a visiting researcher to progress international research collaboration projects. He worked as an associate professor for Mie Mie University Graduate School of Engineering from 2017 to 2023. He was also Assistant to the President for Internship Program from 2018 to 2023. From 2019 to 2023, he worked as a Mie University Carrer Support Center vice director. He also worked as a visiting associate professor for Suzuka University of Medical Science, Japan, from 2017 to 2021. He is now a full professor at Mie University Graduate School of Engineering. 

His current research topics are Medical Informatics, Medical Document Image Analysis, Graphics Recognition, Welfare Information Systems, Ergonomics, Evolutionary Computations, and their application. He is a member of IEEE (and SMC Society), HIMSS, and some Japanese academic societies. His research projects are shown in Research Topics on the website.
